ART THERAPY EXPERIENTIAL COURSE

A 10 week introduction to Art Therapy

Commencing 9th. April 2002

Tuesday 6.30pm. – 8.30pm.

Julie Buxton: Art Therapist

What is Art Therapy?

Art Therapy is considered to be a form of Psychotherapy that evolved in the United Kingdom in the late 1940’s.

The value of Art Therapy lies in the development of the relationship formed between the individual, the therapist and the creative process.  Through the use of images, collage, photography, painting, sculpture and other media, the individual is able to explore and examine their physical and emotional needs.

Though Art Therapy cannot be divided from language entirely, it is a non-verbal therapy capable of breaking down boundaries of language and communication.  It can be particularly helpful for individuals with speech or sensory impairments as well as having mental health or learning difficulties.

It is not necessary to be a good artist to do Art Therapy.  The safety of the therapeutic space with clear boundaries of time and confidentiality allows individuals to express their own sense of creativity.  It is a positive means of expressing thoughts and feelings and beginning to accept ones whole self.

What will the Art Therapy Experiential Course Offer?

A chance to reflect on personal art making and symbol formation, to delve into areas of the unconscious, explore fantasies and frustrations, develop personal confidence and understand what triggers us to react or respond in social situations.  We will explore issues of projection, language in therapy and how emotions and energies are awakened by art making.

Often it is a space where we have permission to be ourselves and to play …

Who is the Art Therapy Experiential Course for?

This experience is not for those who require personal or individual therapy, however individuals draw upon personal experiences throughout the group.

DANCE MOVEMENT THERAPY EXPERIENTIAL COURSE

A 10 week introduction to Dance Movement Therapy

Commencing 7th May 2002

Tuesday 6.00pm. – 8.00pm.

Terry Brathwaite: Dance Movement Therapist

What is Dance Movement Therapy?

Dance Movement Therapy is the use of dance and movement to develop a deeper understanding of the individual self.

Through the use of movement the client and therapist will explore the therapy space together, acknowledging personal and interpersonal issues that may affect the individual or group.

We all use our bodies to express emotions and fears regardless of our ability or disability.  One of the roles of the Dance Movement Therapist is to encourage the awareness of ones self and the abilities one may have for expression through movement.

It is not necessary to be a good dancer or mover to do Dance Movement Therapy.  The safety of the therapeutic space with clear boundaries of time and confidentiality allows individuals to express their own sense of creativity.  It is a positive means of expressing thoughts and feelings and beginning to accept ones whole self.

What will the Dance Movement Therapy Experiential Course Offer?

The group will enable you to understand better (not react to) the cause and effect of personal trauma in life and how this may be addressed through the medium of Dance Movement.

The group works in a safe, compassionate and neutral zone where participants may interact and begin to understand the expression of  feelings and memories through symbolic cross-cultural movement and dance theatre enactment.

In addressing body movement directly, the therapist explores with the group how Dance Movement therapy may work with a client or client group member, aiming to help them to regain (at their own pace) control over confused thoughts and feelings;  identifying these as they arise in the body and channeling them into appropriate communication.

Who is the Dance Movement Experiential Course for?

This experience is not for those who require personal or individual therapy, however individuals draw upon personal experiences throughout the group.

MUSIC THERAPY EXPERIENTIAL COURSE

A 10 week introduction to Music Therapy

Commencing 8th.May 2002

Wednesday 5.30pm. – 7.30pm.

Angela Fenwick: Music Therapist

What is Music Therapy?

Music Therapy is undertaken by a qualified music therapist who seeks, through a mutually developing relationship, to assist in the remediation of specific emotional, physical (sensory/motor), social or learning disorders.

Through sensitive observation and subsequent choice of appropriate elements of music, the therapist aims to establish an interaction – a shared musical experience and activity – leading to the pursuit of therapeutic goals determined by the nature of the disorder (s).

The ability to appreciate and respond to music is an inborn quality in human beings.  It is well know that this ability frequently remains unimpaired by disability, injury or illness.  People who have difficulty in understanding their environment, or whose verbal communication is an inadequate form of self-expression, may nevertheless be stimulated by music and respond to it.

Music Therapists seek through music to arouse and engage clients, to help them towards realising their potential. A client does not have to be musically talented to engage in Music Therapy.

Music Therapists practise in a wide range of environments, being employed by the NHS, Social Services, the Education Service, in prisons, etc., working with groups and individual clients who may have a wide range of needs and disabilities.

What will the Music Therapy Experiential Course Offer?

Over the ten weeks, group members will be able to explore the structures and processes of music therapy in a safe and boundaried place.  Group members will have a chance to use a variety of musical instruments within the context of the group setting.

At the request of the group members, the relevance of music therapy techniques to a particular client group may be discussed in greater detail.  Practical ‘demonstrations’ or simulations may assist the understanding of such issues.

The experience will be creative, powerful, exciting, dynamic, frustrating, awakening, surprising and fun!

Who is the Music Therapy Experiential Course for?

This experience is not for those who require personal or individual therapy, however individuals draw upon personal experiences throughout the group.

Students of the arts, sciences and social sciences, health care professionals, performers, artists, youth workers, teachers, care workers, anyone with an interest in finding out about the potential for the therapeutic healing that Music Therapy offers.

What is required of Group members?

Come with an open mind and be prepared to join in.  No group member will be asked to do anything that they are not comfortable or happy to do.  Respect of confidentiality will be expected from all group members.

Group members are expected to attend all ten sessions unless unforeseen circumstances arise, in which case the BCAT office should be informed at the earliest opportunity.

What does it cost?

10 sessions               £150

Deposit (payable on registration)                £75

Balance payable within 2 weeks of commencement of course
